Matz Cruises at Sonoma

Adam Matz dominated at Sonoma Raceway, and in the process, clinched a coveted spot in the next round of the playoffs.

Much like the previous road course race at Watkins Glen, no one could challenge Matz on pace, as he led 39 of 43 laps. It was a magical night for MPH Alliance, with Matz, Duane Hunt and Ray Polking sweeping the top three. Polking also won the Dash For Cash prize, edging out Jerry Cochran III, who also had a solid seventh place finish.

It was a rough race for AW Motorsports, with all four playoff drivers dealing with adversity throughout the race. Hunter Waters did win the opening stage after staying out when many of the leaders pitted. However, he was unable to make much ground in the second stage, and finished tenth after being involved in two incidents. Johnny Avila and Tyler Saville were involved in a Lap 1 incident and were unable to challenge at the front. Jesse Bunnell did well and finished in eighth place, but was unable to score any stage points.

Looking at the playoff picture, YenSport Racing is in great shape, with Jeff Yenisch clinching with a win the previous week, and Steve Yenisch effectively guaranteeing himself a spot in the next round with a 40 point cushion over the cutline.

Five spots remain up for grabs, with Waters, Justin Gann, Saville Avila and Duane Hunt currently above the cutline. Bentley Glaser and Todd Cray are within striking distance, and Jesse Bunnell will need some good fortune, or most likely, a win to have a shot at advancing to the Round of 8.

The first round of the Fall 2022 ASL Elite Series playoffs concludes at Kansas Speedway on October 16.
