Avila Edges Bunnell at Kansas

Johnny Avila finally looked like the two-time series champion, edging out teammate Jesse Bunnell for his first victory of the season at Kansas Speedway. Avila and Bunnell swapped the lead multiple times in the closing laps, but Avila took control with four laps remaining to seal the victory.

It was a heartbreaking end to the playoffs for Bunnell, who came into the race in a must-win situation. By pitting earlier than the other leaders, he seized control of the race when the pit cycle concluded with 20 laps to go, but Avila’s fresher tires was the difference-maker.

Regular season champion Steve Yenisch finished third, with Todd Cray and Tyler Saville rounding out the top five. Cray needed just a couple more points to advance to the Round of 8, but fell just short of Justin Gann for the final transfer spot.

The Round of 8 starts next week at Darlington, with the field of remaining playoff drivers consisting of Steve Yenisch, Jeff Yenisch, Adam Matz, Johnny Avila, Tyler Saville, Hunter Waters, Duane Hunt and Justin Gann. Catch the action live on Trackside Racing Network on Sunday, October 23!
